In 2022, Carleton College embarked on creating new student housing to replace beds in older, inefficient buildings while developing additional townhouse living options with increased gathering spaces to build on the sense of community. With a goal of being a carbon neutral campus by 2050, the project originally had a target to be LEED Gold Certified. However, after discussions with the design team, it was determined to pursue Passive House (Phius) certification for the eleven separate buildings spread over two sites and constructed in two phases. The process has included extensive energy modeling to determine building performance parameters, working with Phius reviewers to understand the unique context of Carleton, plus educating the Owner and Construction Manager on the project requirements.
