Passive Building focuses primarily on reducing energy usage by adhering to a strict energy budget for heating, cooling, and major energy uses like hot water heating. This is achieved through significant building insulation, high performance windows, outstanding air tightness, removal of energy loss details, and efficient system layouts.

The Passive House standard is for all building types, not just houses. Based on the climate zone, size of building, and use, a customized energy budget is created on a per project basis as a yardstick to measure up to. Certification involves a third party review of plans and an in-the-field commissioning process to ensure all the building elements were installed as intended. This process is vigorous but ensures the best possible outcomes, providing peace of mind to building owners and developers.
